Sonia Sieff is a photographer and film-maker. Her vocation was born at the age of 17, through travelling. She then began working on film sets with renowned cinematographers, before turning to fashion. Her style is marked by a mastery and love of light, as well as an obsession with personality and the body, which she expresses through nudes and portraits. In recent years, while contributing to numerous French and international magazines, she has also devoted herself to her personal projects and exhibitions. Her first book on the female nude, Les Françaises, was published in 2017 by Editions Rizzoli. Her second book, dedicated to Oran, in the footsteps of Yves Saint Laurent's youth, was published in September 2019. Returning to her first love, cinema, she has made a documentary film about her father, Jeanloup Sieff, and is preparing her first feature film. The latter tackles themes close to her heart: photography, fashion and feminism. Her new book, Rendez-vous! published in March 2024 by Rizzoli, bears witness to the evolution of gender, as well as the change of her own vision. Bringing together images of some fifty men photographed from Europe to Africa, the book celebrates the male body in all its poetry and animality.
Following her internationally acclaimed book Les Françaises, which focused on the beauty of the female form, Sonia Sieff presents Rendez-vous !, a sublime and unprecedented exploration of the male nude.
Following her highly acclaimed and resolutely feminist work on women's bodies, Sonia Sieff now turns her lens on men, from all walks of life, photographed in a wide range of locations in France, neighboring European countries and as far away as Africa, in this second volume of her undressed portraits. Celebrating the diversity and positivity of bodies, the fifty men Sieff portrays create a body of work that is as sexy as it is intimate.
Magnificently staged, with over 100 photographs, the photographer has captured the distinct personality of each of the men she went to meet, in his own world. From the sun-drenched Mediterranean to the abandoned bedrooms of Kyiv, these photographs take a fresh look at the male nude, through the prism of a female gaze, revealing in turn their sensitivity and beauty.
Thursday 20 June saw the opening of "Rendez-vous!" exhibition at Galerie 1993. Sonia Sieff's exhibition is open to the public until 5 August at Galerie 1993, offering a unique opportunity to discover her work and a selection of photographs from the book.
